Bereavement support
At Coop Funeral care, our support doesn’t stop after the funeral. We’re here to help in the days, weeks and months that follow. Talking to family and friends can make a real difference, while local charities and support organisations can offer practical and emotional support. We’ve gathered some useful sources below to help you find the right support when you need it.
Asking for help with bereavement and grief
After someone close to you dies, you may need both practical and emotional support. It’s OK to ask for help, and talking to family and friends can be a good place to start. They’ll often want to be there for you, even if they’re not sure what to say or do.
There may also be support available in your local community. Bereavement charities and support organisations can give you someone to talk to, whether you’re looking for practical advice, emotional support or simply someone who understands what you’re going through.
Take things at your own pace and remember that there’s no right or wrong way to grieve. Everyone experiences loss differently.
Other ways to cope with bereavement
Alongside talking to the people around you, there are gentle, personal ways to remember someone you love and help you through your grief. You might find it helpful to:
Make a memory jar – ask family and friends to write down their favourite memories of your loved one and keep them somewhere special to read whenever you feel you need to.
Plant a tree or flowers – choose a favourite flower or plant a tree in their memory, creating a place you can return to and reflect.
Plan something special – this could be an annual meal at their favourite restaurant, a get-together with family or friends, or a fundraising event for a cause that meant something to them.
Scatter their ashes – you may choose a place that held special meaning for your loved one. You could also arrange a small gathering or service so that friends and family can share the moment with you.
Create a keepsake – turning ashes into jewellery or another keepsake can be a meaningful way to keep a little piece of your loved one close.
Make a photo book – bring together photographs, memories and stories in a book you can look through whenever you want to remember the times you shared.
