What happens at a burial service?
Understanding the burial service
A burial service is an opportunity for family and friends to come together to remember someone special, celebrate their life and say goodbye.
Every funeral is different. A burial service may take place in a church, another place of worship, at the cemetery or in another meaningful location chosen by the family. Whatever you decide, we'll help you create a special service that reflects the person you're remembering.
If you're attending a burial service for the first time, or arranging one yourself, here's what you can usually expect.
What happens at a burial service?
On the day of the funeral, your funeral director will guide you through each step.
They may meet the family at home with the hearse and any additional funeral vehicles before travelling together to the service. Some families prefer to make their own way and meet at the venue instead.
Your funeral director will make sure everything is carefully planned, allowing you to focus on being with family and friends.
The coffin is usually carried into the venue by coffin bearers, although in some cases it may already be in place before guests arrive. Family members also have the choice as acting as coffin bearers.
Close family normally follow the coffin and sit together at the front, with friends and other guests seated behind them.
The service is led by an officiant, celebrant or faith leader and can be as traditional or as personal as you wish. It may include:
Welcome and opening words
Readings, poems or prayers
A eulogy celebrating the person's life
Music that held special meaning
Personal tributes from family or friends
Time for quiet reflection
Every service is unique, and your funeral director can help you create one that reflects your loved one's wishes, beliefs and personality.
When the service comes to an end, close family may choose to spend a few quiet moments together before leaving. Some families like to greet friends and relatives as they leave, sharing thanks and offering a chance for people to say goodbye.
If the burial is taking place at a different location, the funeral procession will travel to the cemetery. Your funeral director will guide everyone through the arrangements and make sure the journey is handled with care.
At the cemetery, coffin bearers will carry the coffin to the graveside in preparation for the final part of the service.
At the graveside, coffin bearers will carefully carry the coffin to the burial place before it is gently lowered into the grave.
This is often a quiet and personal moment, giving family and friends the opportunity to say a final goodbye. The officiant, celebrant or faith leader may say some final words, and loved ones may choose to place flowers, petals or a small amount of earth as a personal tribute.
Your funeral director will be there to offer guidance and support throughout, helping the service feel as comfortable and meaningful as possible.
Many families choose to gather afterwards for refreshments or a celebration of life. This offers an opportunity to spend time together, share memories and support one another.
If funeral vehicles have been arranged, your funeral director can take close family to the chosen venue or home after the service.
